National Reconciliation Week

At preschool we recognised National Reconciliation Week (NRW). It is a time for everyone to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. This year the theme is “Be brave. Make change”.

Everyday at preschool we aim to embed Aboriginal culture and language through implementing Dhurga words and resources that Uncle Noel and Trish have taught us.

On Thursday as an extension of this, some children went on a walking excursion up to the Dhurga Rock in Ryrie Park. We looked at the engravings on the rock and recognised “mara” (fish).

We read a story about Aboriginal culture and respect. The children shared their ideas of what the word respect means to them, this included, “being nice” and “being kind to our family”.

The story also reflected this through acknowledging country and they way we look after it and our family around us.

The children all spoke about Braidwood being on Yuin Country and we discussed how First Nations People have lived in Australia for thousands of years.

We then sang the song “Heads, shoulders, knees and toes” using Dhurga language, which we have been learning as a group over the last term.
